2022 PREVIEW

The Chiefs had an opportunity to win back-to-back district titles, but it didn’t happen last year. But with a move down to Class 2A, Lakeland is the favorite to get back on top and why not. The offense is pretty much intact with one of the best passing games in the area and a huge offensive line. Chiefs will be tough to score on as well with an experienced defense.

All-District 2 quarterback Dominico Spataro returns for his senior season as a dual-threat that can drive defensive coordinators crazy. Two of his top receivers also return in Jon Seamans and Kevin Snyder. And when all else fails, Lacota Dippre is a huge target a tight end. Riley Rovinsky will give them another option this season in the passing game while Evan Pochas is the new starting running back backed up by Josh Ponce.

The offensive line returns four starters with the lone newcomer at left guard. Lyndon Bello, Drew Chervenka, and Ethan Depoti are all in the mix. The returning starters are tough and experienced with Adam Wormuth at left tackle, center Jon Clauss-Walton, right guard Thomas Scalzo and right tackle Luke Smurl.

On defense, Dippre was the District 2 Defense Player of the Year and will man one defensive end spot while Smurl returns at the other. Clauss-Walton and Wormuth will play inside with Scalzo providing depth. Linebacker will pose the biggest challenge with only Pochas returning as a starter. Rovinsky will play at the other outside backer while inside Andrew Gelderman, Chris Chmiola, Kyle Lidy and Ponce will all get looks. Spataro and Seamans return as the starting safties while Snyder is back one cornerback spot. Ethan Shea and/or Evan Colichino will fill the other spot.

Zack Janosky returns as the kicker and Snyder as the long snapper. Dippre will handle the punting duties once again.

QUOTE FROM COACH PIWOWARCZYK: The guys have worked hard in the offseason to improve in various areas. We have to replace a few key guys from last season’s team. The key to our season is staying healthy and continuing to play fast on both sides of the ball. As coaches, we have to get the ball to our playmakers on offense. On defense, we need to master the base defense and progress from there.
