2022 PREVIEW
It was another banner year for the Lions as they won another District 2 title and also stopped Dunmore’s district title streak. Trail will have a new challenge ahead of them in 2022 as they move back to Class 1A. They will battle rival Old Forge for the district title in the post-season. But the Lions will be right in the mix for the division and district.
Although Lackawanna Trail lost their starting quarterback, Stephen Jervis will step in with significant experience the last two years. Lukas Gumble returns as one of the running backs in the Wing T offense while Jacob Bartush, Max Kimmel, and Demetrius Douglas will see some time. Hunter Patterson returns at fullback and will be backed up by Logan Edwards. Evan Litwin is a returning starter at wide receiver with Kimmel playing at the other spot. Frankie Cocchini steps in at tight end with two freshmen – Cooper Patterson and Byron Axtell – providing depth.
Three starters return for the Lions including Alex Castellano, who moves from guard to left tackle, center Gary Shaw, and right guard Kolbee Soltis. Jacob Noakes is penciled in at left guard and Jacob Breckinridge at right tackle. Brian Gow, Lucas Evans, Drew Kilmer, and Blake Borick will provide depth.
It will be an all new-look up front for the Lions. Competing for the defensive ends spots will be Shaw, Noakes, Cooper Patterson, Borick, and Kilmer. Castellano, Gow, Breckinridge, Evans, and Axtell will be in the mix insider. The linebacking group will be a strength. Hunter Patterson and Soltis are returning starters at middle linebacker. Ryan Wilbur, Bartush, Edwards and Kilmer will serve as backups. Gumble, Douglas, Cocchini, and Gavin Mulhern will play outside. Litwin is a returning starter at cornerback while Kimmel is back at safety. Cole Rosengrant and Wyatt Laytos will compete for the other corner. Cocchini will also see some time at safety.
Kimmel will be the punter and will also compete for kicking duties along with Borick, Edwards, and Axtell.
QUOTE FROM COACH JERVIS: We will have a nice mix of players returning with quality game experience as well as some young talented players moving up from our jr. high team. Kids have been working hard and expectations are high.
