2022 PREVIEW

Holy Cross matched their highest win total (4) since 2011 with an effective running game and improved play in all three phases of the game. Coach Joe Giorgio feels the Crusaders can build on that success and push themselves over the .500 mark the season, once again powered by that running attack.

The running game starts with Logan Tierney who ran ranked 5th in District 2 last season rushing for 1,395 yards and 8 touchdowns. His success came inside the tackles as he ran with a fullback mentality. Holy Cross hopes to have a more balanced attack in 2022 with either Kyle Cortazar or Zach Cornell taking over at quarterback. Either will have experienced receivers in wideout John Jones and tight end Bobby Staples. Younger receivers Kevin Vincent, Aiden Wudarski, and David Jennings will all compete for playing time. Fred Strein will be the new fullback leading the way for Tierney.

The offensive line will be experienced Pio Tanana, Andrew Naim, and Chris Petrucci all three-year starters. They will have to rebuild the left side with tackle John Elko and guard Zack Minich.

On defense, the Crusaders should be improved. Staples, Naim and Tanana are all returning starters on the defensive front with Elko filling the fourth spot. Tierney plays at inside linebacker where was the leading tackler for Holy Cross. Strein started at outside linebacker with freshman Leland Wudarski penciled in on the other side. Saftey Jones is the only experienced secondary member. Cortazar will play the other safety while Jennings, Vincent, and Wudarski will compete for the cornerback jobs.

The team will determine their special teams contributors in training camp.

QUOTE FROM COACH GIORGIO: We have a nice mixture of returning veterans and young talent. We do need to stay healthy and must replace some key players from last years team. Offensively, we want to run the football and be able to control the clock. Defensively, we have to do a better job of tackling and be able to get off the field on third down.
We are hoping to improve on last years record and continue to build the program in a positive direction.
