2022 PREVIEW
It was a very successful campaign for Coach Jeff Arthur in his first season at the helm for Carbondale Area. The Chargers played a tough brand of football that produced five wins in 2021 and they have a good core of players returning. They move to LFC Division III where they will see if they can break into the top tier of teams this season.
The leader of that offense will once again be running back Vincent DePalma who rushed for 1,354 yards and 14 touchdowns. However, they also have the speedy Devon Reams who ran for 531 yards and 11 touchdowns which will give the Chargers a nice 1-2 punch. Darryl Bennett will take over at quarterback with Sean Bryant and Kyle Jones backing him up. Ethan Brewen and Josh Killhulen will be the new fullbacks. Johnny Orta returns at wide receiver with Malakai DeBerry, Mason Baron, Jake Rosler, and Kyle Zantowsky all competing for playing time. Mitchell Alexander and Brenden Richardson are the new tight ends.
Up front on the offensive line, Luke Kovaleski moves from tight end to left tackle. Chase Arthur and Jake Ulmer are also returning starters. Noah Kilmer and Gavin Connor take over at the guard positions while Dominick Aponte provides depth on the line.
Kovaleski and Kilmer return as the starting defensive ends with Arthur and Alexander being rotated in. New personnel including Ulmer, Connor and Aponte will take over inside on the defensive line. DePalma was the leading tackler last season for Carbondale and was one of the better inside linebackers in the LFC. Drew Balderis and Brewen will also see the field inside. Orta is a returning outside linebacker with DeBerry, Jordan Myers, Kyle Jones, and Scott Santos all competing for playing time outside. Rosler and Reams are returning starters in the secondary with Zantowsky, Baron, and Daniel Gonzalez being considered for the other cornerback slot.
Arthur is back as the long snapper. Colin Bailer returns as the kicker.
