2021 PREVIEW

The Mountaineers followed up their state championship appearance in 2019 with an up-and-down 2020. At times, the young players seemed to make big strides, but still showed signs of inexperience. They will have to take a step up to next level to contend for the division and the district. And they have some pieces in place.

Jackson Wydra will take over at quarterback and will backed up by Brady Zapoticky. The Mounts have experience at running back with Parker Bolesta, Jake DelGaudio and Rocco Ormando expected to get touches. Zach Paczewski also appears on the depth chart. Ryan Cuba, A.J. Fife and Dan Sabulski will be considered at fullback. David Biscontini and Nick Farrell will be the new wide receivers although Ormando and Paczewski could get also see time there. Joey Peters gives additional depth. Peter Harpersberger and Archie Stephens are candidates to become the new tight end.

The offensive line is experienced with four starters returning including left tackle Gabe Allen, left guard Aiden Fennell, right guard James Lehane, and right tackle Colby Klinetobe. The lone new starter is center John Scherer.

Allen and Bolesta return at the defensive ends while John Cummings, Harpersberger, Emmett Moore, Brady Rosencrans and Stephens will provide depth. On the inside of the line, two new starters will emerge from camp with Frank Atherholt, Nate Deyo, J.D. Jennings, Klinetob, Jordan Kovaleski, Joe Price, Mason Calvey and John Scherer all receiving consideration. Jake DelGaudio, who missed most of the season with an injury, returns at inside linebacker while Mark Karcutskie and Farrell are penciled in for the outside backer spots. Fife played extensively last season and will be in the rotation. Cuba and Sabulski will be backups. Ormando returns at saftey and Matt Jesse is back at cornerback. Biscontini, Ben Carpenter and Paczewski are possibilities as the other saftey while Matt Esposito and Peters will compete for other corner position.

Jace Chopyak is the returning place kicker and Biscontini is back as the long snapper. Ormando, Paczewski, and Peters will return kicks and punts.

QUOTE FROM COACH MANNELLO: Special Teams as always, will be our first priority. Some young players will have to step up in depth on special teams. We need to cross train in the secondary to keep speed on the field. We need to develop depth at linebacker. The plan is to roll more players on the defensive line but continued progress in the weight room will be a factor. Offensively, we need to cross train at the skill spots to keep speed on the field. We need to develop depth in the o line that can contribute this year.
