2021 PREVIEW
It’s a new chapter for Chargers football as Jeff Arthur takes over the program. Despite missing the entire 2020 season, Carbondale Area does have some players with experience which should help them early in the season. How quickly the new players can acclimate to the varsity football will probably determine how much success they can have this season.
If you are going to have experience, quarterback is a good place to start. Guy Mushow played the position in 2019 and will be one of the leaders of the offense. Darryl Bennett will be his backup. Expect the Chargers to ride the running game with Vincent DePalma. He rushed for 654 and had 14 receptions as a freshman and will be one of the better playmakers in the division. Devon “Ricky” Reams, Johnny Orta, and Quintin Zaro could see some time in the backfield. Logan Wormuth will be the new fullback with depth provided by Logan Colonna and Willie Durst. Emilio Rodriguez and Kyle Zantowsky will be the receivers and Chaz Kovaleski is penciled in at tight end. Mitchell Alexander, Brenden Richardson, and Gavin Conner are next on the depth chart.
The tackles will be the strength of the offensive line with Luke Kovaleski and Josh Tierney both with experience. Justin Toy, Robbie Huston, and Paul Salvatore will back them up. The guards are expected to be Liam Mesko and Joanthan Purvis although Noah Kilmer, Jake Ulmer, and Carlos Orta will be in the mix. Chase Arthur will be the center with Dominick Aponte backing him up.
The defensive line has experience and should be formidable up front. Both tackles Luke Kovaleski and Tierney return while Chaz Kovaleski has experience at defensive end. Colonna, Ulmer, and Arthur will vie for playing time at the other end. Kilmer, Purvis and Daniel Battle will provide defensive line depth. Reams and Depalma will start at outside linebacker with Zaro and Johnny Orta seeing some time. Carlos Orta has experience at inside backer and will be backed up by Wormuth and Durst. Nick McCord, Rodriguez and Guy Mushow are in the mix at cornerback while Jacob Rosler and Zantowsky will be the safeties.
Arthur is the long snapper. Reams will handle the punting and Colin Ormes will be the place kicker.
QUOTE FROM COACH ARTHUR: I’m looking for this opportunity to lead this team. I believe if we can get physical and tackle well we can shock some teams. Really appreciate how hard the kids are working, especially after losing the 2020 season to Covid.
