This is the 10th edition of our Five To Watch series. We thank The Mattioli Law Firm for coming aboard as our title sponsor for Five To Watch. There are 34 teams in the WVC and LFC so it’s impossible to recognize every single player who might be deserving. The players we do list are some of the best at their position or have an interesting role coming up in 2021 for their team. For players who don’t make the list, we hope you strive to make our lists at the end of the season because they are the ones that really count.
Here are the fullbacks:
Isaiah Cobb, S0. – Wyoming Valley West
Height: 6-2 Weight 230
Cobb has a great combination of size, strength and speed. A weight room warrior, he did 500 lb squat, 290 lb bench and 250 lb power clean. Cobb also ran a 4.79 40 yard dash at a recent combine. The Spartans will try to get their offense on track with the running game and Cobb will be key running the ball and blocking. He also will play linebacker and be one of the defensive leaders.
John Greenfield, Sr. – Old Forge
Height: 5-11 Weight 230
Greenfield can do many different things on the offensive side of the ball. As the Blue Devils fullback, he will be leading a running game that is expected to be one of the better ones in the LFC. Although he didn’t carry the ball a lot last year, expect his carries to go up. But the one place he might surprise some people is catching the ball out of the backfield. The Blue Devils will be balanced offensively with a strong offensive line returning and experience at quarterback. Greenfield is also a key member of the Old Forge defense at linebacker. He was an LFC Division IV honorable mention fullback in 2020.
Aiden Mason, Sr. – Berwick
Height: 5-10 Weight 216
Mason has gotten plenty of playing time in the Bulldogs backfield at different positions. He started his career as a tailback before settling in at the fullback position. He has played regularly since his freshman season and has rushed for 1,212 yard and 7 touchdowns. However, in the shortened 202o season he struggled with injuries. Mason will be a key member of the senior class that will try to kick start the Berwick offense. He was a WVC 4A honorable mention fullback his sophomore year in 2019.
Dante Randle, Sr. – Valley View
Height: 6-1 Weight 215
Randle made his mark on defense last season, but now he will get his shot on offense at fullback with all-state T.J. Noto graduated. The Cougars will return all five starters on the offensive line so the running game should be one of the better ones in the LFC. Valley View likes to use the fullback in the running game and Randle checks all the boxes. He has very good speed for his size and has the toughness that has been evident with Cougars fullbacks over the years. And don’t forget Randle was an LFC Division II first team defensive lineman in 2020 so he will be one of the players in the area making a true impact on both sides of the ball.
David Sudo, Jr. – Pittston Area
Height: 5-11 Weight 210
Sudo had a breakthrough season as a sophomore for the Patriots. He led the team in rushing with 274 yards in five games last year. Expect him to get the ball in the running game and the passing game even more in 2021. Sudo has very good size and is an excellent blocker. Pittston will make him the focus of a young offensive group. Sudo will also be a key member of the defensive line and considered one of the leaders of that unit as well. He as named a WVC Division I second team fullback in 2020.
Hunter Patterson, S0. – Lackawanna Trail
Height: 6-0 Weight 175
When many great players leave a program where they have had a major impact for 4 years, it is hard to find someone to fill their shoes. Patterson will get that chance as he replaces all-state fullback Ray Melnikoff. The fullback play is essential is Trail’s Wing-T offense and the Lions coaching staff is confident Patterson can do the job. He did get his feet wet as a freshman on the varsity level with 33 yards rushing and a touchdown.
